The Barn LINE2025
Collaborative installation and performace created by Tainá Rocha, Julia Shen, Antonio Michaels and Tsumugi Maruo.

What happens when an artist collective unapologetically lies to their audience, keeping up a deceptive facade for weeks? In conceptualizing this work, the idea of over-promising and selling a false experience immediately came to the forefront of discussions. To install is to perform; there are expectations for any art show. When is this show in the room with us? Should you be upset?

Posters, ephemera, and especially social media became instrumental in the success of this project. Advertisements for “The Barn,” an art show with no intention of being actualized served as a facade for the one-night experience. We oversold the experience, and in turn, our own confidence in its success.

Participants were made to wait in a line outside of the installation area before being invited into the space in small groups. Upon entry, participants are met with a near-empty room which they cannot move through without engaging in a pre-determined path. Cameras documenting the experience contribute to an uncomfortable sense of surveillance.
